What exactly is life coaching?
rachel Coffey
This is the one question I get asked the most, directly after someone asks me what I do for a living. The conversation usually goes something like this:
“So what do you do then?”
“I’m a voice coach and a life coach”
“Oh, right interesting. Erm, what exactly is life coaching?”
Its a good question, after all, we all have a life, however happy we may or may not be with it. Why on earth would you need to pay someone to tell you how to have one then. The simple answer is, you don’t. If you want your life to be the way it is right now, you don’t need a life coach at all.
If, however, you want something in that life to change for the better and you either haven’t got to the point of being able to make the decisions to get you there on your own or you’d like a bit of extra back up, then a life coach is the perfect solution.
I’ll be honest with you, I’m not overly fond of the term itself as it can encompass quite a wide range of approaches and a variation in the outcomes. However it appears to be the most widely used term for when people are looking for someone to help them make that change.
The kind of things my style of coaching can help with are;
Making tough decisions
Finding your inner confidence and being the real you
Dealing with difficult people or situations
Moving forward in your career
Dealing with stress
Letting go of issues from the past having an effect today
Working through fears
Achieving ambitions
Creating an even more successful you
Relationship issues
The coaching works best when you are at the point where you want to make a change, when you are ready to move on, even if you think you have no idea where or how.
The other, often un-spoken question is, “Does it work?”
The short answer: Yes, yes it does.
The longer answer: Everyone is an individual and the results of coaching is personal to them. I am glad to be able to genuinely say though, that even I am amazed by the speed and depth of positive change in my clients. The human mind and spirit is capable of so much more than we ever imagine. It is simply about tapping into the potential and looking at things in a way that will allow you to let go of anything holding you back and move forward to the future you desire.
I hope that helps describe a little about what a life coach is and how people might use it to help themselves. Change is within the grasp of each and every one of us, all we need to do, is decide to begin the process, now and act upon it.
