Getting the best out of 2022 - is it time for change?
rachel Coffey
One thing we can say for all of us in the past couple of years, like it or not, we have all become used to the concept of change. However we have probably also noticed how quickly we have adapted, found new ways of living or working and changed our routines.
Enforced change is rarely pleasant, but what about when we make the decision to change ourselves? What is it that makes the changes stick? That allows us to see things through and feel the benefit?
Put it in the positive
It’s always more rewarding to get something than have something taken away. Lots of people tend to think about stopping themselves doing things or ‘getting rid’ of a bad habit. It’s far more compelling though to be aiming toward something that you want. Don’t think about not having to do your current job, think instead how much you’ll enjoy doing a job you love!
Realistically challenging goals
Get inspired by the challenge and set yourself up to achieve it! The aim needs to be big enough to fire us up and put the work in - however it also needs to be something that is possible, given where we are starting from. If you have a big long term goal, break it down and create smaller ones that will add up to the big change when you put it all together.
Give it a timeframe
It will help you chart progress and feel the momentum. If our window of time is too long, it can feel like a drag, instead aim for six week sections and define what you will achieve at the end of that. Also give yourself a place to be midway through, so that you know you are on track. These six week section can then fit into the bigger picture, meaning you are far more likely to get what you want.
Figure out the purpose
Do it because you want to, because you need to for yourself, not because you ‘should’ do it. So many of us do something because we think we ought to. However that often feels like a struggle before we have even begun. You need to do this for yourself ultimately - even if that is beneficial for those around you to. Do it because you want to - and even better do it because you need to. Find a reason you actually need to do this and you will make it happen!
Reap the rewards
It’s not about just achieving your target, it’s what you’ll get out of it once you are there! The joy or promise of reaching a target can be short lived, so instead, think about how this positive change will enable you to do something you want, make you happier or enable you to do or feel something that you couldn’t before. It doesn’t matter if its wearing the outfit you want on holiday or buying a house, if you have how you are going to enjoy the reward of achieving your target it will help you maintain your progress and really enjoy your success.
It can be difficult to figure out changes on our own - sometimes we need that outside eye, accountability or some extra support. Coaching can help you plan, achieve, maintain and enjoy your progress.
